Welcome to > parents > free resources

Here is a list of resources that might just engage your child more in their study of mathematics, develop a few extra skills, and provide an alternative to ploughing through questions in a textbook. And best of all... they are all free! Please, please, please let me know here if you have found any good freebies out there!

Please Note: It is also worth checking out my Maths Games page in the Just For Fun section, as playing games on the internet are an excellent way of encouraging your child to practise maths, and many of the essential skills can be covered without them knowing!

ten quick questions www.csfsoftware.co.uk this is a brilliant piece of software that i regularly use in class. it provides "ten quick questions" on nearly every subject from key stages 3 and 4. you can adjust the timer to suit the needs of your child, the software generates random questions so the exercises are different each time, and the answers are provided! NOTE: this is what is known as nag ware, as the program will freeze for 30 seconds every once in a while until you buy it, but well worth this minor annoyance.

tarsia jigsaw www.mmlsoft.com here is a good one if you are feeling a little bit creative. it is a piece of software that enables you to quickly produce jigsaw and domino matching-up activities for any topic you like. the software is really easy to use, the pupils tend to enjoy the activity (especially the cutting out), and if you click here, you can have a load of my jigsaws to get you started!

times table master times table master a simple little program for testing out your child's ability at good old fashioned times tables!

google pack   this pack contains some really good free stuff from Google. just choose the software you want and ignore the rest. the fancy photo editing software, google earth and the anti-virus stuff are pretty good, and if you want to download videos from YouTube and then watch them offline, you can do that too (click here for more details)

countdown www.csfsoftware.co.uk another gem from the creators of ten quick questions. it's the "numbers game" with music and clock included! this latest version has a facility for pupils to check their answers.

gcse revision worksheets www.clearcreativelearning.com a brilliant gcse textbook, covering all levels and all topics, compete with worked solutions. really good for extra practice or revision. the pdf version is completely free to download!

word search generator www.csfsoftware.co.uk and another from csf! generate your own word search very quickly indeed.

these are brilliant. they are packs produced by the DFES for children to take home during the holidays before either their SATs or their GCSEs. the idea is that the pupils send 10 minutes a day for 10 days covering each topic they will need for their exams. the support letter explains all. just click on the link and save them to your computer. NOTE: in order to view some of these files you will need Acrobat Reader, the latest version of which can be freely downloaded by clicking on the Google Pack above!

puzzles www.puzzles.com loads and loads of brilliant puzzle packs to download for free. the shape stuff is amazing, and I am very partial to using the logic puzzles as starters in my lessons. there may not be a lot of maths involved, but the thinking skills that such activities develop are essential for success in all subject.

figure this www.figurethis.org this is a really nice idea. its a pack of fun, interesting maths challenges, aimed at younger pupils, which can be freely printed out and distributed. what i like best is the fact that there is a parents' section (as all good websites should have!), encouraging you to get involved with the development of your child's maths!
