Starters: Odd one out – TES Maths Resource of the Week 62

The following resource has been kindly shared on the TES Maths website. It is available to download for free by registering. And to access all the lovely Resource of the Week (ROTW) resources, just click here

What is it?

This is a wonderful collection of starter activities that cover a wide range of subjects. There are four sets of starters, and in each one there are six topics covered – making 24 starters, if my maths is correct! Topics covered include classics such as BIDMAS, averages, prime factors, and much more. Each activity follows the same format: there are 15 questions and 16 answers. Students must match up the questions with the answers and find the odd answer out. The beauty of such a format is that it is self-checking.

How can it be used?

I have been using these with my Year 8s once a week whilst I get the register sorted and deal with the delights of missing homeworks and students who have been absent. The rest of the class crack on with the sheet. At the end, we have a vote on which is the odd answer out. I also ask the students to write down what they think is the most difficult question, and I choose two or three of these to quickly go through. Of course, resources such as these are great for highlighting problems and misconceptions, and if that is the case I can make a note of it and pick it up in a future lesson. Lovely stuff.

Thank you for sharing!
