Then there are issues of safeguarding, differentiation, mindset and more that I hope will come up as we progress. Hello and welcome to another episode of the Mr Barton Maths podcast, with me Craig Barton.
This is another episode in my Teaching from Home podcast series – a series dedicated to supporting teachers who are working from home amidst the Covid-19 outbreak of 2020.
My aim is that you will hear from a wide variety of teachers, sharing a wide variety of experiences. There will be technology focussed episodes – just how does remote teaching work? But also episodes focussed on the practicalities of coping with setting students appropriate work whilst also having to look after your own children at home. Then there are issues of safeguarding, differentiation, mindset and more that I hope will come up as we progress. There will be maths teachers, teachers of other subjects, and primary school teachers. There will be teachers from the UK and overseas. Hopefully something for everyone. I have no idea how long this series will go on for – but so long as people keep listening and hopefully finding it useful, I shall continue!
This time I was joined by not one, but two guests from the land down under. First we have friend of the podcast, maths teacher and podcast host himself, Ollie Lovell. And Ollie and I are joined by maths teacher and Desmos guru, Bryn Humberstone. This proved to be a fascinating conversation. Ollie and Brun’s schools are very different in terms of children’s access to technology, so we were able to delve into how they are both trying to make it work. I also learned just how far Desmos has come as a tool perfectly suited to remote teaching – and not just for Maths. Indeed, Bryn makes a compelling case that Desmos is all you need to check your students’ understanding, and he has shared lots of links in the show notes, including his Desmos whiteboard, which is essentially an online whiteboard where teachers and students can submit answers and thoughts freehand. I also take the opportunity to ask Ollie what he learned from his wonderful series of podcasts interviewing teachers and experts about remote learning.
