Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Mr Barton Maths Podcast, with me Craig Barton.

This time around I was delighted to welcome back to the show, Doug Lemov

Doug is probably best known as the author of Teach like a Champion – a book which has had a huge influence on the last several years of my teaching and thinking, and which I believe is a must for all teachers to read, jam-packed as it is with loads of practical, easy to implement strategies that can be truly transformative. Doug has also authored and co-authored two further books that we discuss in this episode: The Coach’s Guide to Teaching and Teaching in Online Classrooms, and set to release Teach Like a Champion 3.0 later this year. Doug and his team’s CPD sessions are regarded as some of the very best in the world.

Doug’s first appearance in the show, back in 2017, was a highlight for me. It was around the time I was writing How I Wish I’d Taught Maths, and it was speaking to legends such as Doug, the Bjorks, Dylan Wiliam and Daisy Christodoulo around that time that really helped shape my thinking, and I will be forever grateful.

Now, the original plan was to have Doug share insights from his Teaching in Online Classrooms book. But with the announcement of a return to the classroom for students in UK schools, we decided upon a shift in focus. So, instead Doug picks out key takeaways from three books – The Coach’s Guide to Teaching and Teaching in Online Classrooms, and Teach Like a Champion 3.0 – that he believes are of direct relevance to teachers and students returning to the classroom in the coming weeks.

And Doug has some solid gold to share, including:

• What profound thing about relationships and classroom culture can we learn from sports, and how can we help develop it?
• What are some of the positives teachers can take from the remote teaching experience back into the classroom?
• Things then get a little awkward as I start to slag off exit tickets, but fortunately Doug saves the day with a wonderful suggestion to use technology for delayed exit tickets.
• I then clear up a misunderstanding I had about the strategy Doug calls Cold Call – and I realise it is an even more powerful strategy than I thought
• Finally, Doug shares some of his favourite strategies from Teach like a Champion 3.0, including a shift away from lesson planning to lesson preparation

This is an episode directly relevant to now – March 2021 – with the impending return to classrooms. But also an episode that I will return to many times in the future, packed as it is with golden nuggets.
